Our Lincoln parts department prides itself on providing quality services, components, and education to our community. This time, we decided to compile a brief guide to understanding the difference between the drivetrain and powertrain in your Lincoln SUV.

Lincoln Parts: Your Powertrain

In vehicles like the Lincoln Corsair, the powertrain consist of all internal components that make your car move. This primarily refers to your engine, which converts gasoline into energy and provides the force that is used to rotate your wheels.

In hybrid or electric vehicles, the battery-powered motor serves this purpose in place of a traditional combustion engine. Though your car's SLI battery helps to start the engine, the battery itself does not provide power to the wheels. Therefore, it is not considered part of the powertrain.

Lincoln Parts: Your Drivetrain

The drivetrain of your Lincoln model includes all of the mechanical components that help to physically rotate your wheels with the power it receives from the engine. But a drivetrain does more than simply transmit power. It also helps optimize the force it receives.

Consider the transmission, for example. This complex array of gears and rotors takes the energy it receives from the powertrain to distribute the force received from your engine. By engaging and disengaging different gears - either automatically or with driver input through a clutch and shifter - your transmission takes the energy from the engine and helps your car find an ideal balance between engine performance that is too slow or too fast.

This transmitted power then travels along the driveshaft and to one or more of your vehicle's axles, where a transaxle, final drive, and differential optimize the rotational force that reaches your wheels, causing them to rotate at the perfect speed.
